Australia is having big taxation and productivity conversations at the moment, the aim of which is to future-proof our economy* and do something to bring Australians’ standard of living back into a healthy place, given that housing unaffordability and general ‘cost of living’ issues are still a major concern for anyone not in the 1%. The heads of the biggest tech firms of course have a seat at the table and are advocating for opening the floodgates to AI, riding roughshod over IP law, removing regulations and running their energy and water-guzzling data centres here in SEZs. It is clear to anyone who is paying attention that without regulation, many current tasks and roles across multiple industries and sectors will be seriously impacted by unregulated AI, if not eliminated altogether. Which would be less concerning if there was any indication that governments had any sort of cohesive plan to replace the jobs that will inevitably vanish.
I made this cartoon for today’s The Age and Sydney Morning Herald newspapers.
And yes, I deliberately chose Tetris because it’s a game that most Gen X, Y and Millenials will be familiar with. Just as it’s our mid-late-career jobs that are most likely to be eliminated as our decades’ of output and experience are hoovered up by this technology to be spat back out with no compensation.
Is your job or industry impacted by the arrival of AI? Postively? Negatively? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Brilliant!
awesome Megan! AI is pervasive, and invasive, whether anyone wants it or not.
